My name is Becky Teague, and my journey from a stay-at-home mom to the founder of Dogwood Bookkeeping is a testament to the strength and adaptability we all possess when faced with life's unexpected challenges.
For 18 years, I dedicated my life to raising my children and running the household. In 2019, I re-entered the workforce and was hired in the accounting department of a local HVAC company. Soon after, my husband had a work accident, leaving him disabled and unable to contribute at home. Juggling a 40-hour workweek while caring for a disabled husband and four kids, along with having all the same responsibilities as a stay-at-home mom was tough, but I knew I could handle it..
In early 2020, it seemed as if the whole world came to a standstill overnight due to COVID-19. Just as we were settling into the new routines of remote working and distance learning, another curveball was thrown with a diagnosis of breast cancer, requiring swift and extensive surgery and reconstruction. Although my employer was initially understanding of my new health issues, difficulty healing meant extended time off work, and their patience soon wore thin. Afterward, the stress of balancing work, kids, being a caretaker, home responsibilities, my health, and an increasingly volatile marriage eventually resulted in losing both my job and my marriage.
Despite these challenges, I stood tall and still had to provide for my four kids. Realizing that a traditional 40-hour job was no longer feasible, I turned to my strengths and passions.
I’ve always loved numbers and organization and have enjoyed helping friends and family handle their bookkeeping since before Y2K. The idea of having a business where I could take care of the bookkeeping for small businesses and still be there for my kids was the answer to my prayers. So, I decided to start a bookkeeping business and earned my QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisor accreditation, and, in November 2021, Dogwood Bookkeeping was born.
